Abruzzi GT4 Series Round 4 Debrief

Drivers headed to a wet Circuit Zolder for the fourth round of the Abruzzi GT4 Series. The weather conditions created a perfect storm for an exciting race. This article provides a brief summary of some of the notable events from this round.

Zolder, already a challenging circuit in dry conditions, became even more difficult under heavy rain. The wet track made qualifying a thrilling session, shaking up the usual order. Jack Southfield dominated the session, setting lap times nearly a full second clear of the field to take overall pole position. In the Am class, Stefan Melis continued his upward form by setting the fastest time.

The race promised even more action as the track appeared to be drying towards the end. Jack Southfield and Am class leader Stefan Melis had good starts as the green flag dropped. The opening lap was hectic, with drivers searching for grip and jostling for positions. Some, like Guillaume Hamling, Johnny Wooh, and Ryan Walker, took the gamble of starting on slick tyres. However, it quickly became clear that the track was still too wet, making it a dangerous choice.

Overtaking was particularly risky, with Zolder’s large kerbs and close barriers offering little forgiveness for mistakes. As the race settled, drivers focused on minimising errors, running down the clock until the pit stop phase. Tom Davidson made the most of this, executing a well-timed overcut during the pit cycle, moving from sixth to a podium position.

By the end of the race, Jack Southfield had built an incredible gap of 31 seconds over the field. In the Am class, there was a special moment as Stefan Melis held on to his lead to secure his first class win. Guillaume Hamling, who persevered on slick tyres, took the fastest lap as the track dried and slicks became the optimal choice. Wet races never disappoint, and the fourth round of the Abruzzi GT4 Series was certainly one to remember.
