Abruzzi GT4 Series Round 2 Debrief

After an exciting start to the season, the Abruzzi GT4 Series grid headed to the Hockenheimring for the second round, delivering yet another enthralling race. Following both great successes for some and disappointment for others, this article will highlight the key talking points from this spectacular event.

Qualifying proved challenging for many drivers as track conditions were tricky, with varying wind speeds affecting crucial braking zones. Despite the difficulties, Kieran Sharp emerged as the fastest driver in the Pro class, while Nathan Lewis-Stone claimed the top spot in the Am class.

As the green flag dropped, nothing could have prepared everyone for the chaos that ensued. Multiple drivers were involved in a catastrophic incident. The accident unfolded in two parts: Liam Giles, starting from his best qualifying position, had a collision with Bobby Moss, while just a few rows back, Felix Smoggi and Pierre Antoine Delaire made contact. With many cars unable to avoid the situation, several innocent drivers sustained damage.

As the race progressed and drivers prepared for their mandatory pit stops, Kieran Sharp led the field, while James Smaggasgale took charge in the Am class after passing Nathan Lewis-Stone following a mistake on lap nine. Unfortunately for Stefan Melis, a misjudged fuel strategy during the pit stop phase proved costly, as the Belgian driver ran out of fuel just a few corners from the pit lane.

In the closing stages of the race, the battles between Pro drivers Toby Prosser, Tom Davidson, and Jamie Nuttall remained intense. Toby Prosser made a spectacular move, fighting hard through multiple corners from the turn six hairpin to the exit of turn ten, ultimately securing a top-five finish.

Kieran Sharp and James Smaggasgale crossed the finish line as the race winners in the Pro and Am classes, respectively. With two new race winners this season, the championship remains unpredictable. Heading into the third round at Road Atlanta, the title fight is still wide open, and it could go to anyone.
