TSRC Sports Car Series Round 5 Debrief

The latest round of the TSRC Sports Car Series saw drivers tackle Monza, also known as the “Temple of Speed” for its long straights and fast corners. With a challenging weather forecast ahead, catch up on all the action in our latest article.

We saw new pole sitters in both the GTP and GT3 classes, potentially due to strong winds and low grip levels on track. Wiardi Rombouts secured pole position in the GTP class, edging out Tom Davidson by just three hundredths of a second. Guillaume Hamling claimed pole in the GT3 class, showing impressive pace in his Lamborghini Huracán Evo GT3.

At the race start, with rain expected on the horizon, drivers were uncertain about when it might hit, knowing it would likely play a key role in the race outcome. Wiardi got off to a strong start, maintaining the GTP lead ahead of Tom Davidson. In the GT3 class, however, pole sitter Guillaume was caught off guard at the green flag, allowing Jack Southfield to seize the lead. True to Monza’s reputation, there were several incidents early on involving drivers such as Marcio Lopes, David Barnes, Mlondolozi Gambushe, and Kieran Sharp.

As the race progressed, it seemed the rain would arrive any moment, though drivers still needed to pit for their scheduled fuel stops. Whether the rain would be enough to require wet tyres remained unclear, but Guillaume Hamling, Jose Monteagudo, and Jamie Nuttall took the gamble to switch to wets. Initially, it appeared to be the wrong choice, as they lost time in the pits and were slower than those on slick tyres. However, light rain soon began to fall. While the slick runners lost minimal time at first, by the final three laps, conditions deteriorated enough that many were forced to switch to wet tyres.

Jamie Nuttall came through to pass both Wiardi and Tom on their slicks, claiming his fourth win of the season. In the GT3 class, Jack Southfield just managed to hold onto the lead on slick tyres at the chequered flag, narrowly fending off a charging Jose and Guillaume, who were just one lap away from catching him

Jamie Nuttall has now secured the GTP championship with a round to spare. However, the GT3 championship remains undecided heading into the final round at Sebring. Check out our next article in a week's time to see how the championship concludes!
