Abruzzi GT4 Series Round 6 Debrief
The Abruzzi GT4 Series reached its finale as drivers headed to Spa for an intense showdown. With both the Pro and Am championships hanging in the balance, find out in this article who emerged victorious in this action-packed race.
Spa presented another unique challenge as the longest track on the calendar, giving drivers fewer laps than usual to secure their final grid positions of the season. Jack Southfield claimed overall pole position with an impressive lap, while current Am class championship leader Bart Raven took pole in his class. On the front row for the Pro class title showdown were Jamie Nuttall and Kieran Sharp. Although Jamie’s position put him in line to claim the championship, Kieran still had everything to fight for.
The race began with an exciting sequence of overtakes, as the initial corners and straights provided great racing opportunities. Jamie Nuttall had one of his best starts of the season, catapulting himself over Raidillon to pass Tom Davidson and then overtaking Southfield on the outside at Les Combes. Unfortunately for Bart Raven, contact with Stefan Melis in the first corner of the opening lap set him back, while his closest Am class rival, Matt Cheverton, escaped the incident cleanly to take the Am lead.
After the opening laps, most drivers seemed focused on playing the long game, forming a tight slipstream train. It was almost reminiscent of a NASCAR race, with drivers positioning strategically before the all-important pit stops for fuel. Working in tandem, Jack Southfield and Tom Davidson managed to slip past Jamie Nuttall, setting off a chain reaction that allowed Kieran Sharp to move further up. Meanwhile, in the Am class, Matt Cheverton kept out of trouble, while Bart Raven worked his way back up through the field.
The race continued at full throttle towards the end, with the battle for the lead intensifying between Jack and Tom. On the final lap, exiting the last corner, it was a nail-biting sprint to the finish line, with Tom narrowly taking the win by just 0.011 seconds. Jamie held Kieran off to round off the podium. In the Am class, Matt Cheverton maintained his composure, avoiding trouble and capitalising on Bart’s earlier setback to secure the class win.
With the final round complete, the championship titles were decided in spectacular fashion. Jamie Nuttall claimed the Pro championship, turning his early season around and demonstrating that persistence truly pays off. The Am championship saw a dramatic conclusion; Bart Raven’s early incident proved costly, while Matt Cheverton’s consistent, strong performance all season, coupled with his final race victory, earned him a well-earned title.
