Creator Spotlight: Ryan Walker Photography

The first person to feature on our site, and a well-respected figure in Sim Racing for his photography, is none other than Ryan Walker. Previously known for his commentary in the Sim Racing scene, Ryan has also ventured into the world of Sim Photography.

Sim Racing is an interesting niche with many ways to get involved, from driving and coaching to broadcasting, commentating, and as we explore today, photographing virtual races.

Capturing still images that convey motion and tell a story is a unique skill, and Ryan Walker is quickly becoming a talent worth following. We asked him a few questions to gain insight into his work.

How did you get started with sim photography?

RW: I've always been a fan of motorsport and sim racing photography, especially on iRacing. I enjoy sharing pictures from the leagues and races I participate in, and I thought it would be cool to start my own iRacing photography thing. This is how RWS iRacing Photography came about.

Did you have prior knowledge, or did you learn and draw inspiration from others?

RW: It was a completely new experience for me. I started from scratch and just learned as I went along, trying different things such as graphic settings and camera angles. I've also been enjoying and loving experimenting with settings on Adobe Photoshop so far.

My inspirations would probably include RC Sim Photos, Mr. Hedge Sim Racing Photography, and HXH Photography.

What is your favorite style of image to capture?

RW: I like to try and capture high-speed images with motion blur added in. It is something I have always liked when it comes to viewing real-life images, like whenever I watch the 24 Hours of Le Mans and view pictures from that race as inspiration.

What techniques do you use when taking your photos?

RW: I don't have specific techniques; I experiment with camera settings and angles, then edit photos in Adobe Photoshop until I'm satisfied.

Do you have any further aspirations or ambitions for your photography?

RW: Just to have fun and enjoy it. If a league, team, or driver is interested in having me take pictures for them, then great.
